Brandon Armstrong has been gracing the stage for years. At 32, the professional Latin and ballroom dancer has been charming audiences on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” for nearly a decade now. As a “pro,” Brandon has been showcasing what it is like to create an emotional performance through dance. What many fans may not realize, however, is that Brandon was adopted as a baby. This is his adoption story.
Brandon’s Early Upbringing
Brandon Kelly Armstrong was born in San Francisco, California on June 5, 1994. The multiracial baby – African American and Polynesian – was adopted at birth by a white military family. He was raised as a Mormon in Napa, California. The family moved to Lehi, Utah where Brandon took an interest in dancing at 12 years old.
After graduating from high school, Brandon served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee.
Who Is His Adoptive Family?
His adoptive mother’s name is Carlene, whom Brandon has affectionately referred to as “Mama Carlene” on social media. In recent years, he shared a few childhood photos with his mom, with this sweet caption:
“My A1 since day 1! Everyone who knows mama Carlene knows that she is the realist! Im a firm believer that having two loving parents may be one of the biggest blessings in this life and i was blessed with two of the coolest! I love ya mom!”
Brandon has two sisters and a loving adoptive father, as well. The professional dancer has not shared many other details about his adoptive family, other than the fact that he was raised by a supportive and religious military family who encouraged him to pursue his passions.
What Does Adoption Mean to Brandon?
Brandon Armstrong has openly shared the positive influence that adoption has had on his life. In episode two of the latest season of “Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro,” there was a heavy focus on storytelling through dance. As a part of this lesson, Brandon demonstrated a deeply personal dance routine, which he said was inspired by his experience of being adopted into a white family.
“I wanted to share that story and the peaks and valleys that it has, but most importantly, I really wanted to share how I view adoption, as something that’s extremely positive to me.”
To reflect on this journey, Brandon’s dance began with heavy choreography, with a much lighter ending to portray his growth through childhood.
