We’re excited to announce a series of five educational talks that are aimed at facilitating discussions about adoption in your family. There are talks for parents, teens, even a series just for dads.

Search? Reunion? What Might It Mean for our Child and our Family?

Wednesday May 16, 2012 7pm-8:30pm
Is your child talking about making contact with his/her birth parents? Do you wonder if it is something he/she is thinking about? Has it become a conversation between you? Our upcoming professionally led workshop is designed for parents to exchange ideas, to support one another, and to learn. Leave with a better understanding of complex issues like responding to questions about search and reunion, the role of social media, the power of language and more.

Talking With Your Children About Their Adoption

Monday May 21, 2012 7pm-8:30pm
This group session is designed to help you start or restart the conversation with your child about adoption. Some youngsters have lots of questions and others never bring it up. Many parents are hesitant to bring up the “A” word. While some kids might not engage in this discussion, you can be assured they will be listening to everything you say.

Fathers Support Group

Three Tuesday evenings, 7-8:30pm. May 22nd, May29th and June 5th
[Commitment to all three meetings required. Fathers of children of all ages welcome. First-time fathers and fathers of more than one child welcome. Fathering skills group to follow.]
If you have ever wondered whether your satisfactions and frustrations as a father are unique or shared, talking with other fathers will be helpful. Perhaps you would like to think and talk about what it means to be an adoptive father. Join other AWL fathers in a confidential group and discuss what being a father and an adoptive father is all about.

Talk for Teens

Are you thinking about contacting your birth parents? Have you spoken with your parents, friends or a counselor about this?
Have you quietly begun your own search, maybe on Facebook? This workshop is an opportunity to talk about some of the questions and hopes and fears that are related to this decision.

Contact Has Been Made on Facebook; now what do we do?

Thursday May 24, 2012 7pm-8:30pm
This group is for parents whose child has been contacted via Facebook or their child has contacted/searched for their birth family on Facebook. Whether it’s happened or not, this discussion will help prepare you for the emotions and complex issues that can arise. This group will focus on how to appropriately maintain a relationship and create parameters moving forward.
